If you skipped Windows Vista and made the jump directlyfrom XP to Windows 7, you might have been wowed by the huge jump Microsoft madein visual enhancement and features. For most users who upgraded and ran Windows 7 on their old pc, all the extra add ons that look great – the see thru menus and visual multi-tasking – will now perhaps slow down the computer. Here are some ways you can improve the performance of Windows 7.
*Switch off Aero*
The big jump Microsoft made in visuals between the XP and Vista operating systems — the great see-thru taskbar and translucent window frames — means PCs with a slow video card will find it hard to deliver the same speed you may have been used to in the past. Turn off the excessive graphics for better performance on entry-level or older computers. Right click the desktop, select Personalize -> Windows Color and Appearance and turn off transparency. Plain, but faster.
*Switch off visual effects
Even with the above switched off, there are really more visual effects in Windows 7 that use up your PC’s performance, and can be safely turned off. Right click Computer and select Properties. Click Advanced System Settings, which will open the System Properties popup window. Select Advanced tab and under Performance, click Settings, and choose Custom. Now, uncheck all the boxes except the bottom four. Restart your PC and notice the difference in speed!
